Sunday, June 23
Morning: excursion to Montenvers and Mer de Glace by rack railway. Introduction of the spectacular glacial development of the last 200 years by Prof. Dr. Walter Wildi. Walk down (or using the cable-car) to the actual glacier looking at different levels of the progressing melting of the ice, visit of the ice cave. Return to the railway station and Hotel Mer de Glace for Lunch.
Afternoon: travel back to Chamonix by train, transport by bus to Les Praz de Chamonix, walk to the frontal and along the lateral moraines of the maximum extension of the glacier in the 19th century. View of the actual front of the glacier from below. Panorama Geology and introduction to the regional Geology of the Mont Blanc Area (as a bridge to the Monday Excursion).

Monday, June 24
Field-trip Geotraverse Chamonix - Mont Saxonnex by bus. Stops at Diosaz (small walk along the gorge, sediments of the Aiguilles Rouges Massif), Railway station Servoz (panoramic view of the Aiguilles Rouges massif and its sedimentary cover, separated by a large tectonic fault from the Platé Massif, consisting of the Subalpine/Helvetic zone sediments), La Provence (beautiful view to the complicated thrust structures along the eastern flank of the Arve valley, below the Tête du Colloney) the small village of Romme (general view to Subalpine/Helvetic folds and Préalps) and finally Mont Saxonnex (general view to the Salève, Molasse basin and the Préalps).
